HS2's first tunnel boring machines

HS2’s first completed tunnel boring machines (TBMs) set to leave the Herrenknecht factory in Germany – August 2020. The two TBMs – each weighing in at 2,000 tonnes and 170m long – will be used to dig the 10 mile long Chiltern tunnel. The two TBMs will be operated by HS2’s main works contractor, Align JV – a joint venture formed of three international infrastructure companies: Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick.
